Telegram, a messaging app that has currently declared that it will explore new ways to monetize with ads from 2021 , has been gradually expanding its legion of followers in the country. The application reached a new milestone: it is found on 45% of Brazilian smartphones. The data was taken from the Panorama study on mobile messaging, carried out by Mobile Time in partnership with Opinion Box. The research was carried out with just over two thousand Brazilians, between the 20th and 27th of January this year .
This analysis was carried out Latvia Email List during the period in which WhatsApp announced the launch of the new privacy policy , which had its date changed to May . Although Telegram has already been showing an increase in its user base for a few years, this change in WhatsApp's policies meant that the application expanded its growth. The phenomenon also happened with other applications, such as Signal, which became the most downloaded messaging app on the Play Store in Brazil .
Regarding the numbers referring to the growth of Telegram, in 2018, the application was used on only 15% of Brazilian smartphones. In 2020, this percentage increased to 27%. This data was collected by the same survey.
WhatsApp remains in the lead
Despite Telegram's surprising growth numbers, WhatsApp still reigns among Brazilian cell phones. Although it showed a 1% drop in the last year, the messaging application continues to be used on 98% of cell phones in the country, that is, a number more than twice that of Telegram. Also according to the Panorama survey on mobile messaging , 86% of users use WhatsApp at least at some point during the day.
The daily use of Telegram, on the other hand, is much lower, therefore still occupying second place on the podium. Research shows that only 22% of users open the app frequently, which is a positive point for WhatsApp. Telegram, however, continues to gain new functions from time to time.
WhatsApp stops warning if audio has been heard in conversations
Another novelty involving WhatsApp is in relation to the audios sent by users of the application. WhatsApp no longer notifies if certain audio was played, which was done using a blue microphone next to the voice file.
The new feature is already working on iOS and is not mandatory for all users and can be deactivated. The function will only be validated for users who also deactivate the read message function, that is, the two blue tick symbols. The audio message microphone takes on a new color (gray), not showing whether the audio was played or not. Remembering that the new functionality can only be used on iOS for now, in version 2.21.40.13 of WhatsApp.
To activate, you need to go to the ellipsis menu in the application itself. Afterwards, you need to click on Account > Privacy > Read confirmation. By deactivating the function, the audios will also be included.
